As we shared in a previous blog, fleas and ticks are a persistent nuisance in the Dallas Metroplex. Because many flea and tick products contain known neurotoxins and pesticides that are potentially harmful to our pets, ourselves, and the environment, pet parents have become wary of chemical solutions. Fortunately, a variety of natural flea and tick prevention methods and products offer alternatives. These can be both effective and better for your pets, home, and planet. Today, I’m walking through the different categories, exploring how these solutions work to ward off fleas and ticks. I’ll also share what products stand out and some expert recommendations.
Important Note
This post is specific to fleas and ticks. While traditional heartworm prevention contains strong and often controversial ingredients, there is no truly reliable natural alternative. At least not one that is equivalent to what you might get at your veterinary clinic. Because Dallas pets are at high risk for heartworm, I’m not sure it’s worth the risk. Before trying a natural alternative, ensure your veterinarian has approved it.
Consult with your vet when introducing new supplements or devices to ensure safety and optimum results!
Essential Oil Flea & Tick Barriers
Essential oils are often used in natural pest prevention due to their strong scents and insect-repelling properties. Products like Kin+Kind Flea/Tick Repel Spray for Dogs & Cats use plant-derived oils. These oils often include cedarwood, lemongrass, lavender, and peppermint. These botanicals not only discourage fleas and ticks from landing on pets, they may also kill them on contact.
Additionally, do your research and opt for reputable brands like Cedarcide, Midoricide, and Wonderdide, which use only the highest quality essential oils. Look for oils sourced in the US and products made using ethical, organic, and responsible practices. Many of these products are sprays, which have to be used frequently to be effective. These brands sell various formulations, some for pets and people, some for household items, and others for yards.
Always verify that an oil-based spray is safe for your particular species; some essential oils can be harmful to cats or sensitive dogs. Always read and follow instructions carefully. And, make sure they are recommended for active infestations if you have one. Not all essential oils kill pests, while others do.
Garlic Flea & Tick Defense
Garlic’s natural sulfur content is said to make blood less appealing to fleas and ticks when incorporated into a pet’s diet. Bug Off Garlic, Woof Creek Flea + Tick Defense for Dogs + Cats, and similar supplements offer carefully formulated doses designed for pets. They are usually administered in powder or tablet form and tasty to pets.
These products provide potential repellent benefits while minimizing the risk of garlic toxicity, which can occur with excessive intake. Always consult your veterinarian before starting any garlic supplement because it feeding garlic can be controversial. If you choose to try it, remember that it’s essential to follow dosage guidelines precisely. Not doing so can lead to, at minimum, a very upset tummy.
Jessica Fisher, host of the healthy pet podcast, The Pet Parenting Reset and canine nutritionist uses Bug Off Garlic with her own dog, Kim. “It’s natural and effective so we can skip the neurotoxins that are damaging to our pets, your children, and the environment,” she says.
High Tech Flea & Tick Protection
For a tech-based and completely non-chemical approach, ultrasonic and electromagnetic pest repellents have become popular. Devices like the Tickless Classic Pet and FleasGone tag are worn on the pet’s collar and emit ultrasonic pulses or electromagnetic fields. These signals deter fleas and ticks by disrupting their ability to sense hosts or communicate. While scientific consensus is mixed, some pet owners embrace these because they are eco-friendly and chemical free.
For these products to work, you want to make sure your pet is already free from fleas and ticks. These aren’t designed to eliminate off infestations. You can also layer these with a topical or oral preventative like those listed in this blog. I’m a big fan of layering strategies to ensure that our pets are fully covered even when we forget to spray them or run out of a product.
Samm Hutchison, Founder of Bear’s Bites and canine nutrition expert, swears by Tickless. “We go to the woods on vacation and the ticks are heavy there and we have never had a tick or any fleas since we started using it. Tickless is not waterproof. We clip it on his collar and, when we go swimming, we take it off and clip it back on when he’s done.” Learn more about Samm and her amazing single-ingredient pet treats, which she sources and makes in the US here.
Physical Flea & Tick Barriers
Natural dusts damage pests’ exoskeletons and dehydrate them. Buck Mountain Parasite Dust uses Diatom Flour and herbal extracts, while Wholistic Pet Organics Diatomaceous Earth Powder is pure Diatomaceous Earth (DE.) These powders can be sprinkled onto pet bedding, around the home, or sometimes directly onto the pet (with caution).
Please note that DE must be food-grade to ensure safety because pets inevitably ingest it, even if only a small amount. In addition, proper application is crucial to avoid respiratory issues. DE should not be inhaled in large quantities. Follow instructions to ensure you and your family stays safe when using this natural solution.
Systemic Support Against Fleas & Ticks
Herbal tinctures like Solutions Pet Products Parasite Free Tincture combine extracts from anti-parasitic plants such as neem, wormwood, and black walnut. Administered orally, these blends aim to make pets’ internal systems less attractive to parasites while supporting overall immune health. As with all supplements, professional guidance from a veterinarian is recommended to ensure the product is suitable for your animal’s health profile. This is especially true if your pet is on pharmaceuticals. Herbs, while natural, are potent and powerful!
