The History of The Farmer’s Dog
As is the case with many pet entrepreneurs, a co-founder of The Farmer’s Dog found himself in a pet-related pickle that led him to a marketable solution. He was in the midst of navigating his dog, Jada’s, severe digestive issues. Despite his many efforts, he was unable to find a commercially available food that worked for her. Their vet recommended a homemade diet, and just like that, Jada’s stomach issues were gone.
Jada’s dad, Brett, saw the improvement and knew he had to bring his recipe to other families. Today, The Farmer’s Dog has served millions of meals nationwide through its personalized plans and fresh food subscription.
Why Dogs Need Fresher Foods More Than Ever
Many of us remember dogs from our youth that thrived on table scraps and whatever they managed to scavenge while out on the town. These dogs seemed to live forever and never seemed to need to go to the vet. Was it the food? The exercise? The freedom? It’s hard to tell but pet rearing has changed a lot since then, and so have our goals as pet parents.
Today, most dogs are indoor dogs – with some exceptions. Our dogs don’t hunt for their own food or scavenge. Instead, they usually wait for us to fill their bowls twice a day and walk them before and/or after work. Most dogs are admittedly more sedentary – especially judging from rising pet obesity rates. Because we do our part to ensure pets get their much-needed exercise during our daily dog walking services, we also advocate for fresh food diets that can enhance our dog’s health and are a significant improvement over processed kibble diets.
Fresh Food Plus Exercise for the Win
In our experience, the best ways to keep a dog healthy is by prioritizing the following two aspects of their well-being:
1. Feeding a Species-Appropriate Diet
The words “species-appropriate” are meant to guide us in making choices for our pets that honor their nature – from their teeth to their tail, if you know what I mean…
Dogs are considered either omnivores or carnivores – depending on who you ask. Dogs are also opportunistic eaters – we’ve all seen the Labs and Beagles that’ll pull treasures out of the trash if you let them. That said, dogs will usually go for the meats, eggs, and other real (aka human) foods before they go for a bowl of kibble. Wouldn’t you agree?!
At The Farmer’s Dog, they use fresh, high-quality protein in their recipes. Real food with real meat is more digestible than the rendered scraps that are used in many commercial pet foods. High-quality ingredients provide more nutrient-rich meals. Better nutrition helps dogs maintain healthy weights, enjoy increased energy levels, and feel better.
2. Providing Daily Physical Exercise
In addition to advocating for improved diets, at PCPSI, we are passionate about providing dogs with daily physical exercise. No matter their breed, size, or age, dogs require physical movement to keep their hearts, lungs, joints, and muscles thriving. When they are too sedentary, dogs can develop cardiovascular disease, experience obesity, lose muscle tone as they age, and more.
As professional dog walkers serving the Dallas Metroplex for over 30 years, we work with pet parents to design an exercise schedule that meets dogs’ unique needs. From exercise walks for adult working breeds to sniffing excursions for puppies and geriatric dogs, we pride ourselves on giving dogs of all fitness levels the exercise they need.
