How Freezing Temperatures Impact Pets’ Health - Park Cities Pet Sitter, Inc

For pets, freezing temperatures can affect more than comfort. Cold snaps, ice storms, and sudden weather changes can have real impacts on physical health, mobility, and overall wellbeing, especially for vulnerable pets. Today, as the Dallas Metroplex braces for our first winter storm of the year, I’m breaking down how freezing temperatures impact pets’ health. Let’s go!

Dogs and cats regulate body temperature differently from humans. While some cat and dog breeds are built for cold climates, many Dallas pets are not acclimated to freezing conditions. Short-haired dogs, small breeds, seniors, puppies, and pets with medical conditions are especially sensitive to temperature changes.

Exposure to cold can increase the risk of hypothermia, particularly during prolonged outdoor time or wet conditions. Shivering, lethargy, weakness, loss of appetite, and seeking warmth are all signs a pet may be struggling to maintain their body temperature between the usual 98ºF and 102.5ºF. According to this article by Veterinary Partners, “a body temperature below 98ºF indicates that your pet needs urgent veterinary attention.”

Cold temperatures can exacerbate arthritis and joint inflammation, making movement more painful for aging pets and those with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Dogs that normally enjoy walks may appear stiff, slower to rise, or reluctant to move during colder days. Reduced movement can lead to muscle stiffness, creating a cycle of discomfort if activity drops too much. Cats too can suffer from stiffness. choosing to stay in bed longer and play less.

Shorter, more frequent walks or playtime paired with gentle indoor enrichment can help maintain mobility without overexposing pets to cold or icy conditions or overexerting painful bodies.

Winter air, both outdoors and indoors, tends to be dry, which can lead to cracked paw pads, flaky skin, and irritation. Ice melt products can further irritate paws and noses, especially when residue isn’t wiped away after walks. Cold weather can also reduce a pet’s thirst response, increasing the risk of dehydration. Ensuring access to fresh water and monitoring intake is especially important during winter months.

Humidifiers and water fountains are a great way to lessen the effects of dry winter days while encouraging pets to drink. As for ice melt, choosing the right product is always a good start around your home. My friend, Isabel Alvarez Arata of Covered in Pet Hair, swears by Redmond Salt’s Natural Ice Melt. Per the product description, “With 4 naturally occurring salts and a full spectrum of sea minerals, Redmond’s Nature’s Blend outperforms rock salt and is safer around kids, pets, and plants.”

Sudden weather changes, power outages, and altered schedules can increase stress for pets. Cats may hide more during storms, while dogs may become restless or anxious when routines are disrupted. Stress can weaken immune responses and contribute to behavioral changes, especially in multi-pet households.

Maintaining consistency, even with adjusted routines during winter’s shorter days and during inclement weather, helps pets feel secure. While you won’t be walking your dog as long this weekend, sticking to their usual potty break schedule will be comforting. Just make sure you all bundle up!

Protecting pets during cold weather requires thoughtful adjustments. Weather-appropriate outerwear, paw and nose protection, shorter walks, and indoor enrichment all help reduce risk while meeting pets’ needs. Cold weather may be temporary in Dallas, but its effects on pets can be lasting if ignored. Paying attention to comfort, mobility, hydration, and routine helps keep pets healthy, not just through winter, but year-round!

Of course, when workdays run long, weather complicates schedules, or travel overlaps with winter storms, having professional pet care support ensures pets receive consistent, safe care without unnecessary exposure to the elements!
