March brings two cat-centered reminders we love: Cuddly Kitten Day (3/23) and Respect Your Cat Day (3/28). At first glance, they seem to celebrate opposite ideas: one focused on affection, the other on boundaries. But together, they highlight something important: the best relationships with cats balance love and respect. At PCPSI, this balance is at the heart of how we care for cats across the Dallas Metroplex. Today, I’m sharing 3 things Dallas cats want from their cat sitters and how we offer just that for them and their families.
Affection On Their Terms
Kittens often invite interaction. They’re playful, curious, and more likely to seek out attention. Cuddly Kitten Day is a great reminder of how joyful those early bonding moments can be.
But as cats grow, their preferences become more defined. Adult cats may still be very affectionate, but they choose when and how. That’s where Respect Your Cat Day comes in. Cats are not passive recipients of attention; they are active participants in their relationships. As such, they prefer affection on their terms.
3 Things Dallas Cats Want From Their Cat Sitters
After 30+ years of caring for cats, we know what Dallas cats want from their cat sitters, and we know how to provide these things while still ensuring their needs are met during their owners’ absence.
1) Cat Care with Consent
Respecting cats (aka care with consent) starts with reading their signals. A relaxed cat may approach with a soft body, upright tail, or gentle head bump. A cat who is unsure or uncomfortable may flatten their ears, flick their tail, crouch low, freeze, or retreat. Rather than approaching or picking up a cat right away, our highly trained and knowledgeable cat sitters allow cats to approach us first. This simple shift away from overly excitedly approaching a cat to passively engaging when a cat displays a desire to do so, helps them feel in control of the interaction, which reduces stress and builds trust over time.
As professional pet sitters, we pay close attention to body autonomy and behavioral cues. Instead of pushing interaction, we adjust our approach. We may move slowly, speak softly, and give space when needed. This awareness helps prevent fear-based reactions and allows even shy or cautious cats to warm up at their own pace.
We won’t approach a cat who is resting in their cat tree unless we know they want pets. We won’t try to pull a cat out from under the bed unless we have to medicate them and have discussed best practices with you and/or their vet. And, we will get creative with toys and wands to entice interaction without pushing boundaries.
2) A Calm, Familiar Environment
One of the biggest advantages of in-home cat care is that everything stays the same. Their space, scents, and routines remain familiar, which supports emotional stability.
During each visit, we focus on the essentials cats rely on: fresh food and water, clean litter boxes, and a calm, predictable presence. From there, we tailor our interaction based on the individual cat(s) in our care. Some want playtime and engagement. Others prefer quiet companionship nearby.
Both are valid, and both are respected!
3) Pet Parent Involvement
Caring for cats isn’t just about what happens during the visit; it’s also about staying connected with pet parents. Whether you’re across town or across the country, knowing how your cat is doing brings peace of mind.
We keep communication open with detailed updates, photos, and notes after each visit. If anything changes, behavior, appetite, or routine, we share that information promptly so you’re always informed.
This partnership allows us to provide care that feels consistent and aligned with what your cat is used to. By following your lead, we know your cat will be at ease and content, because you know your cat best.
Because Love & Respect Go Hand-in-Hand
Cuddly Kitten Day celebrates connection. Respect Your Cat Day reminds us how to maintain it.
By prioritizing consent, reading body language, and keeping communication strong, we create an environment where cats feel safe, understood, and cared for, just as they should. If you were to ask Dallas Cats what they want from their pet sitter, they would tell you that when cats feel respected, affection naturally follows. We don’t ever force cats to do anything they aren’t comfortable with, because we know cats aren’t just small dogs; they are complex creatures that value their territory and their safety above all else.
